The Dad Bod Dilemma: Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is Key to Your Fitness Comeback

In recent years, there has been a cultural shift towards normalizing what has been coined as the Dad Bod or the Craft Beer Body. This trend suggests that it’s acceptable to carry extra weight as long as one has broad shoulders and strong arms. Clothing brands like True Classics have embraced this concept by marketing specifically to this body type, offering shirts with tapered sleeves to accentuate biceps and a loose fit around the stomach.

While brands are embracing “body diversity” because it is good for profit margins, the normalization of excess weight should not be mistaken for true health. Our grandfathers, for example, were typically lean and fit. According to the CDC, the average weight of an adult man was 166.3 pounds in 1960; today, it’s over 190 pounds.

While everyone has their hypothesis on this shift, some blaming the move away from animal fats to seed oils. Others say the increased consumption of carbohydrates and synthetic sugars, or our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. No one knows for certain, and it is potentially a combination of things that have caused this rise in body fat. It cannot just be diet alone because the men of the 1960’s were not paragon’s of health, even our professional athletes smoked cigarettes and drank, sometimes even during the game.

Despite arguments against fat-shaming, even progressive institutions like Harvard acknowledge that “Physical activity decreases fat around the waist and total body fat, slowing the development of abdominal obesity.” Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining optimal health and longevity.

The Benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

1.      Cardiovascular Fitness and Weight Loss

BJJ is a highly effective form of exercise that combines both aerobic and anaerobic elements. It involves intense bursts of activity followed by brief periods of rest, which can dramatically increase your heart rate and improve cardiovascular health. The constant movement and engagement of various muscle groups also help to burn calories and promote weight loss.

2.      Strength and Muscle Tone

BJJ training engages the entire body, requiring strength and endurance in the arms, legs, and core. Through regular practice, you’ll develop lean muscle mass, improve muscle tone, and enhance overall strength. This functional strength is not only beneficial for grappling but also for everyday activities.

3. Flexibility and Agility

BJJ incorporates a variety of techniques that require flexibility and agility. Over time, you’ll improve your range of motion, joint flexibility, and overall body coordination. This can reduce the risk of injury and enhance your performance both on and off the mat.

4. Mental Well-Being and Stress Relief

Training in BJJ requires focus, discipline, and mental acuity. The physical and mental challenges of grappling and sparring can help to reduce stress levels, improve mood, and promote a sense of well-being. The camaraderie and social interaction with fellow practitioners also provide a supportive community that contributes to overall mental health.
