Which Way Western Man: Masculinity In Crisis in Modern America

In America today, the concept of masculinity seems to be under constant scrutiny, often portrayed as toxic or undesirable. From Hollywood movies to social media echo chambers, there’s a pervasive narrative that suggests traditional masculine traits are not only outdated but potentially harmful. But is this demonization of masculinity truly justified, or is it contributing to a larger crisis in our society?

Renowned psychologist Dr. Jordan B. Peterson once remarked, “If you think tough men are dangerous, wait till you see what weak men are capable of.” This quote elegantly captures a profound truth about the nature of masculinity and its role in society. Masculinity, when properly channeled can be a force for good. A source of strength, protection, and liberty. However, when suppressed or vilified, it can manifest in destructive ways like violent outbursts or addiction.

Pop culture in America has played a significant role in perpetuating the notion that masculinity is inherently problematic. We see it in movies where strong, assertive male characters are today often portrayed as brutish or violent, while sensitive, emotionally vulnerable characters are celebrated as heroes. There is nothing inherently wrong with empathy, but empathy taken to its extreme invites those who would manipulate or take advantage of you. Many are familiar with the dangers of excess cruelty but few contemplate the dangers of excess empathy. Few people consider that there are sociopaths among us who prey upon your capacity for compassion to their own advantage.

The truth is that virtue is derived from the ability to say no, resist temptation, stand up for what is right, and defend those who cannot defend themselves. It is often strong, independent men who possess the courage and conviction to do so. Those who are too weak to refuse the edicts of corrupt authority are destined to either live a life of apathy or, worse yet, become complicit in collective atrocities. Many people look back on historical injustices like genocide or slavery and believe they would possess the fortitude to refuse it. The reality is few have ever and few will in the future.

In today’s increasingly polarized and uncertain political landscape, America is in dire need of strong, independent men who are willing to uphold moral principles and defend the values that underpin our society. This doesn’t mean reverting to outdated notions of machismo or dominance. Rather, it means embracing a balanced and nuanced understanding of masculinity, one that values the strength of not just one’s body but one’s character.

Now more than ever, we need men who are willing to take responsibility for their actions, lead by example, and stand up for what is right, even when it’s difficult. We need men who are not afraid to challenge the status quo. To say NO and actually mean NO when they say it. In doing so, we can reclaim the positive aspects of masculinity and forge a brighter future for ourselves and the generations to come.

In the discourse surrounding masculinity and its portrayal in modern America, the martial arts have stood as timeless conduits for shaping juvenile boys into men of maturity and discipline. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, among other grappling arts, stands out as a prime example of this transformative process, instilling values of physical fitness, humility, and grit. Unlike solitary weight training, grappling arts foster functional strength through dynamic compound movements, incorporating lifts, throws, and drags that engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously. The importance of grip strength cannot be overstated. While individual competitor sports may cultivate autonomy and competence, they equally humble the athlete, reminding them that victories and defeats alike are a personal responsibility. The rigorous training regimen of grappling arts demands not only physical endurance but also mental fortitude, requiring practitioners to show up day after day, honing not just their bodies but also their minds. As we reflect on the crisis of masculinity in modern America, the lessons imparted by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu serve as a beacon of hope, offering a path towards cultivating strong, resilient men who embody the virtues of discipline, humility, and perseverance.
