How To: Tying Your Jiu Jitsu Belt

One of the first skills you learn in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is how to tie your belt properly. While it might seem simple, tying your belt correctly is a fundamental part of your training and a mark of respect for the art, your instructors, and your fellow practitioners. A well-tied belt stays secure during practice, allowing you to focus on your techniques and training.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you tie your BJJ belt perfectly:

Step 1: Find the Center

Fold your belt in half to find the midpoint. Place the center of the belt on your belly button, ensuring equal lengths on both sides.

Step 2: Wrap Around

Wrap the ends of the belt around your waist, crossing them behind your back and bringing them back to the front. The left end of the belt should go over the right side.

Step 3: Over and Under

Take the left end (now on your right side) and tuck it under both layers of the belt from bottom to top. Adjust to make sure the belt is snug but not too tight.

Step 4: The First Knot

Cross the left end over the right end, creating an “X.” Then, tuck the left end under the right and pull both ends to tighten the knot.

Step 5: The Finishing Knot

Now, cross the right end over the left, making another “X.” Pull the right end through the loop created and tighten the knot. The ends of the belt should hang evenly.

Step 6: Final Adjustments

Ensure the belt is secure and comfortable. The knot should be tight enough to stay in place during training but not so tight that it restricts movement.

Mastering the technique of tying your belt is an essential part of your BJJ journey, symbolizing readiness and respect for the discipline. As you progress in your training, the simple act of tying your belt will become second nature, marking your growth and dedication.
